Demanovská Valley and caves

Demänovská Valley spreads across the northern slopes of The Low Tatra Mountains south off the town Liptovský Mikuláš and is considered the most spectacular valley of the range with peaks reaching the height of 2,000 metres above sea level.

Demänovská Valley – the prettiest and most visited locality of the mountain rage Low Tatra Mountains.

Demänovská Valley's municipality comprising parts Tri studničky, Jaskyne, Repiská, Lúčky a Jasná was established in 1964. The village is 16 km long and at present it is most frequently visited area of the Low Tatra Mountains, part of the National Park of the Low Tatra Mountains.

First weekend cottages were built after WWI and in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century Demänovská Valley became acclaimed due to the presence of Caves. The cave system consisting of 30 caves is 21 km long, Two of them are open to public Demänovská Ice Cave and Demänovská Cave of Freedom. The decision to build a cableway to Mt. Chopok in 1936 significantly helped further development of the village Demänovská Valley and the region of Liptov.

Demänovská Valley has side ridges and spreads within the peaks of Ďumbier (altitude of 2,043 m), Krúpova hoľa (altitude of 1,927 m), Chopok (altitude of 2,024 m), Ďereše (altitude of 2,003 m), Poľana (altitude of 1,889 m) to the north of Liptov Basin.

Demänovský Karst and Vrbické Mountain Lake are genuine treasure of the nature of Demänovská Valley.

Ski and touristic resort Jasná Low Tatra Mountains with its magnificent Mt. Chopok reaching to altitude of 2,024 metres forms the closure of Demänovská Valley village.

Demänovská Cave of Freedom

Demänovská Cave of Freedom has been attracting visitors for long with its abundant colourful sinter formations, mystic underground stream “Demänovka” and magic pools. It is the most popular accessible cave in Slovakia.

Demänovská Ice Cave and Demänovská Cave of Freedom in Low Tatra Mountains form the longest cave system in Slovakia and belong to the most frequently visited attractions of Liptov region and Demänovská dolina village.

Demänovská Cave of Freedom – Location

Demänovská Cave of Freedom is situated on the right side of Demänovská Valley in the northern part of Low Tatra Mountains, only 1 kilometer distant from Wellness Hotel Chopok ****. The cave is a part of National Nature Reserve Demänovská Valley in the territory of Low Tatra Mountains National Park. The cave entrance is 870 m above sea level, in the valley Točište.

Access to Demänovská Cave of Freedom

Demänovská Cave of Freedom is situated 13 km south off the town Liptovský Mikuláš (Low Tatra Mountains) and only few kilometres below the popular ski resort Jasná Low Tatra Mountains. The ascend to the cave is about 400m long along the serpentine path and takes about 10-15 minutes. It leads from the parking lot. The nearest bus stop of public transport is: Demänovská Valley, Cave of Freedom..

Demänovská Cave of Freedom Route

Two types of routes are available: Traditional route and Exclusive route.

Traditional Route

Traditional route points out the most unique spots of the Demänovská Cave System, which was made accessible to public May 05, 1933. Presentations focused on genesis and history of the cave and description of particular parts are given when visitors stop at the most outstanding passages. The traditional route of Demänovská Cave of Freedom is 1,150 m long with elevation of 86 m. It takes 913 steps to overcome. The traditional route takes about 60 minutes.

Exclusive Route

Exclusive route of Demänovská Cave of Freedom comprises traditional route and attached Great Dome – the largest underground space accessible to public in Slovakia with underground stream bed and soft pure white sinter. The following part includes Rosy Hall and Král's Gallery, morphologically most colourful formations of the cave, unique cave water lilies and lake sponge shapes, cave pearls and many more beautiful sinter creations along the passage. The exclusive route is 2,150 m long, has the same elevation and 1,118 steps. The exclusive route takes 100 minutes.

Demänovská Ice Cave

Demänovská Ice Cave – unbelievable richness in colours and shapes of sinter formations, unique sinter water lilies and other lake forms of sinter filling.

The cave entrance is magically set in the cliff of Bašta, on the northern side of The Low Tatra Mountains, two km off north Demänovská Cave of Freedom. Ice cave fill have been formed for recent 500 years and in combination with sinter decoration creates exceptionally beautiful tour. Demänovská Ice Cave presents the northern part of world- famous Demänovská Caves. It is unique by its permanent ice filling, bizarre and enormous shapes of underground space, precious cave fauna and rich history.

Demänovská Ice Cave – Location of the Cave

Demänovská Ice Cave is located in the Nature Reserve Demänovská Valley, the area of The National Park Low Tatra Mountains, on the right side of The DemänovskáValley, only 300 m from Wellness Hotel Chopok ****. The entrance to Demänovská Ice Cave is about 90 m above the valley bottom, the elevation of 840 m, in the cliff Bašta.

Access to Demänovská Ice Cave

The cave is located below the ski resort Jasná Low Tatra Mountains, 10 km to the south off the town of Liptovský Mikuláš, in the Low Tatras Mts., on the right side of the Demänovská Valley. The entrance can be seen from the parking place, about 90 m above the bottom of the valley. A serpent path leads upwards, past the Kamenná Chalet, by a forest road (600 m) with boards of the educational trail with two resting spots. The ascent to cave takes approximately 20 min. The nearest bus stop of public transport is Demänovská Valley, Ice Cave.

Demänovská Ice Cave Tour

The route of Demänovská Ice Cave is 650 m and elevation of 48 m. The entrance and exit are at the same elevation, only 40 m distant one from the other. The rout takes about 45 min. The trail leads through huge river passages interconnected by steep sections. The first part of the tour leads through cave spaces with sinter formations, and the second part leads through iced spaces of the cave. The combination of sinter and ice formations offers very interesting tour, where visitors can learn about cave space coming to existence, as well as sinter formations, glaciations conditions and its influence on original sinter fill. Cave spaces consist of oval, river modelled passages and domes reshaped by collapses and frost weathering.
